Hello, I’m Soren Alexander (he/him)

I am a self-taught queer and trans tattooer, currently based in “ottawa” (on unceded Algonquin - Anishinabeg territory). I first began machine tattooing in 2020, tattooing only myself and a few friends. After a break I came back to tattooing in 2022 and eventually moved away from machine tattooing to try handpoking in early 2023 for my cave art project. I immediately knew it was all I wanted to do and have been handpoking exclusively ever since.

Artistically I am inspired by nature and natural cycles, the wheel of the year and themes of death, life, and impermanence. Non-human peoples feature heavily in my work, especially horses and birds. I also feel a connection to the deep past of human peoples, and artistic and cultural traditions from our own pre-history. Archaeology, biology and natural history intersect in my work, and through the ritual of tattooing I hope to be able to bring others closer to these connections between ourselves, nature, and deep time.

I am always learning and striving to improve my craft. My aim as a tattooer is to push the medium of handpoking as far as I can, creating larger, bolder and more detailed pieces than are conventionally considered possible through manual tattooing. I’m thrilled to be a part of the growing community of contemporary handpoke tattooers who are currently doing just that, as well as dismantling long held and misguided assumptions and stereotypes about handpoke tattooing that hold it as inferior to machine tattooing.
